Sue Clay

Sue, born and educated in Huddersfield, was a local teacher of Art and Design for many years before become a freelance artist 12 years ago. She graduated in 2001 with an MA in Design at Leeds University. Felting and non-woven fabric construction became a passion in her research. She now teaches this in her studio and in residencies in schools and colleges throughout the country. She also creates a range of fashion textiles and accessories and wall hangings, which she exhibits nationally and internationally. Sue’s experiences as an expedition artist working in remote parts of Kenya proved to be the catalyst that inspired her to work with the medium of wool in felting.

Artist in Residence

Sue is now a visiting lecturer at Univerities and teacher and has led workshops throughout the country. She has worked with children in schools, community workshops, colleges and with people of all ages, abilities and special needs.

She likes to have an inclusive approach, addressing all the school in assembly, and possibly doing an inset session with staff. The outcomes are usually large felted wall hangings and/or 3-D pieces for exhibition. Fleece is a very communicative medium to work with and offers success and enjoyment to all.

Sue was featured artist at the Holmfirth Artweek exhibition in 2009.
